Raccoon in the Attic: Signs, Risks and Removal

Signs of a raccoon in the attic include heavy nighttime thumps, torn soffits or vents, and droppings or a latrine. Spring removal needs care because an attic raccoon is often a mother with kits that must be located before the entry is sealed.

How to know it is a raccoon

Raccoons are large and nocturnal, so the clues are distinctive. You hear heavy thumping, dragging and vocal chittering after dark, not the light scurrying of mice or the dawn activity of squirrels. Outside, look for torn soffits, bent or pushed-in vents, and flattened paths on the roof.

Inside or at the entry you may find droppings or a concentrated latrine, which also signals contamination that needs cleanup.

Why a raccoon in the attic is a problem

Raccoons damage insulation, ducts and wiring, and their latrines contaminate the attic and can carry disease. They are strong enough to enlarge entry points and tear into new areas. Left alone, a denning raccoon causes escalating damage and a lingering odor, so removal and sealing are worth doing promptly.

What happens to the babies?

In spring and early summer, an attic raccoon is frequently a mother denning with kits. Humane removal locates the young first, because sealing the entry with babies inside leaves them to die in the wall — creating a severe odor and contamination problem on top of the welfare issue.

A careful removal reunites or relocates the family appropriately and only seals once the attic is confirmed empty.

Keeping raccoons out

After removal, the entry is reinforced and sealed with materials a raccoon cannot reopen, and other weak points — loose soffits, uncapped chimneys, roof-edge gaps — are addressed. A sturdy chimney cap and solid soffit and vent screening are the main defenses. Then the latrine and any contaminated insulation are cleaned so the space is safe again.

The takeaway

Heavy night thumps, torn soffits and a latrine mean a raccoon — often a mother with kits in spring. Remove humanely, then seal. Call (209) 563-1650.
